As an Indonesian living overseas, wearing an outfit designed by a fellow Indonesian doesn’t only make me look good, it makes me feel good. It makes me proud.

So on this hot summer day, I walk along the streets of Beverly Hills wearing a wrap-around-and-tie sarong, designed by an award winning designer Lulu Lutfi Labibi of Jogjakarta origin, whose love for fabric draping techniques such as wrapping, layering, and tying, as well as turning traditional style into high fashion clothing has become his signature. This chiffon skirt is in timeless black and white with a long and bright red band accent. Such a gorgeous contrast in colors. This traditional-turned-high-fashion piece doesn’t have a fixed pattern. It’s merely a wrapping skirt that you can freely and creatively wrap and tie around your body, any way your imagination takes you. It’s so easy to mix and match.

As for the top, I am wearing a black and white stretch knit cotton crop top in crepe, which still reflects traditional Indonesian fashion. This kind of bustier-like top was commonly worn by Indonesian ladies in the countryside for centuries. The fusion between the traditional and high fashion design of this piece creates a fantastic match to my sarong. To enhance the theme of traditional fashion, I pick out some bright-colored accessories, such as bracelets and necklaces of ethnical styles and designs, alongside a mid-sized Balinese style clutch, made of woven fabric with tassels and pom poms, of similar bright colors. Last but not least, I put on a pair of black and white open toe high heels with red snakeskin strap to match the popping colors of my outfit and accessories.

If this fabulous combination of colors and fashion doesn’t look sweet and sensational to you, I don’t know what will..

The use of the Union Jack in fashion is nothing new. We all know that a lot of countries’ flags are used in fashion including the U.S. flag, but the Union Jack seems to be used most often. It may be that the Union Jack is not a copyrighted design so can be printed without having to pay any royalties. But it may be that vintage is really in vogue and Old-British is cool!

A number of designers I know use this flag including Chanel, Dolce Gabbana, Gucci, and of course British designers, Vivien Westwood, Burberry, also Top Shop. They have everything from leggings to T’s to handbags to you-name-it emblazoned with the print.

The Union Jack is not just in fashion; we can find it in home decoration and artwork as well. Designers can play with the colors and pattern while still keeping it instantly recognizable as the national flag.

Today I am wearing a Union Jack sleeveless t-shirt matched with white leggings with a geometric style that I think plays well with the flag’s design. This outfit creates a casual yet stylish look. The leggings are like ventilation so it can make you feel aaaah to let the breeze go through to your bare skin.

Paired with a red suede ankle boot and handbag with similar schemed pattern to complement the British flag, you are certain to look casual, sharp and to stand out!

Admit it or not, almost every one of us is inspired by many public figures as seen on TV or Other forms of mass media. These influences affect the way we think, talk, walk, work, dress, eat, party and even love . I too feel and react to these influences. Let’s take Sarah Jessica Parker’s fashion style in The Sex and the City: The Movie, she wore a slim white dress with a giant flower pin on her right chest and many people followed and copied that look. But, rather than doing the same dressing up, I choose to use this style to dress down, and use some smart touch-ups not only to look different and to change the genre but also to look just as phenomenal !

Let’s see what we can do – Lets combine a simple outfit style with oversized eye-catching pieces, in different shades of earthy color orange. These over washed low rise salmon shorts with a frayed hem and lace look chic and up-to-the-minute. The fray gives a free and unruly hot touch, and the lace makes the shorts look both attractive and artful. And To pair with the shorts, I chose a body fitting brown spaghetti strap top and a huge distinguishing salmon-colored flower pin. This combination of pastel and earthy colors is very appeasing and natural. Let’s say “easy on the eyes” . The center of attention is the huge flower and You can choose to attach it to your outfit whenever you get the urge – add a stylish hat to complete your chabby chic charming high tea attire.

Speaking of stylish hats, Philip Treacy London is a household name in the Great Britain. Philip Treacy is the award-winning milliner whose creations are so fancy, they are considered ultra high-end. His head pieces use premium materials and accessories, such as genuine leather, silk, velvet, laces, veils, flowers, bows, crystals, and feathers among others. But you can make your own huge flower pin by simply getting your own flower, glue, and the pin from Etsy or Hobby Lobby, and get crafty and creative !
