As an Indonesian living overseas, wearing an outfit designed by a fellow Indonesian doesn’t only make me look good, it makes me feel good. It makes me proud.
So on this hot summer day, I walk along the streets of Beverly Hills wearing a wrap-around-and-tie sarong, designed by an award winning designer Lulu Lutfi Labibi of Jogjakarta origin, whose love for fabric draping techniques such as wrapping, layering, and tying, as well as turning traditional style into high fashion clothing has become his signature. This chiffon skirt is in timeless black and white with a long and bright red band accent. Such a gorgeous contrast in colors. This traditional-turned-high-fashion piece doesn’t have a fixed pattern. It’s merely a wrapping skirt that you can freely and creatively wrap and tie around your body, any way your imagination takes you. It’s so easy to mix and match.
As for the top, I am wearing a black and white stretch knit cotton crop top in crepe, which still reflects traditional Indonesian fashion. This kind of bustier-like top was commonly worn by Indonesian ladies in the countryside for centuries. The fusion between the traditional and high fashion design of this piece creates a fantastic match to my sarong. To enhance the theme of traditional fashion, I pick out some bright-colored accessories, such as bracelets and necklaces of ethnical styles and designs, alongside a mid-sized Balinese style clutch, made of woven fabric with tassels and pom poms, of similar bright colors. Last but not least, I put on a pair of black and white open toe high heels with red snakeskin strap to match the popping colors of my outfit and accessories.
If this fabulous combination of colors and fashion doesn’t look sweet and sensational to you, I don’t know what will..
